Malibu U

Short-lived 1967 ABC-TV prime-time musical variety show, hosted by former teen idol and Ozzie and Harriet star Ricky Nelson. Malibu U was shot on a private beach north of Malibu Pier. After the opening titles and theme song ("All the students report to the dean of the school/He will tell you to work just as hard as you can/Getting a tan/At Malibu U"), Nelson made his entrance, dressed in trunks and a surfer T-shirt, introduced as the "Dean of the Drop-Ins." He would invite"professors" (pop singers) to "lecture" (sing their latest hit) to the "student body" (including a group of dancing girls known as "Malibeauties"). Surf clips were occasionally used between songs, as were brief comedy skits.

Performers on Malibu U included Buffalo Springfield, James Darren, the Turtles, Lou Rawls, Leslie Gore, the Doors, Dionne Warwick, and a rendition of "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy that was equally charming and bizarre.

Malibu U debuted in late July and was canceled after just seven episodes.
