"Surfin' Safari"

Simple but catchy 1962 song by the Beach Boys, containing a short checklist of popular early '60s surf breaks, maneuvers, and lingo. "Surfin' Safari" was the Beach Boys' first national Top 20 hit, peaking at #14 on the Billboard charts. It went to #1 in Dallas and Minneapolis, as well as the more obvious beach cities like Los Angeles and San Diego. Later in the year, the song topped the charts for three weeks in Sweden. All told, the single sold 900,000 copies.

"Surfin' Safari" was cowritten by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, with Love on lead vocal. The song's references were supplied to nonsurfers Wilson and Love by Jimmy Bowles, a surfer from Manhattan Beach and brother of Judy Bowles, Wilson's girlfriend. "Surfin' Safari" is the opening track on the Beach Boys' debut album of the same name. Hoping to cast as wide a net as possible across the youth culture, the "Surfin' Safari" single was backed with a hot rod song called "409."

Lyrics to "Surfin Safari":

Lets go surfin now
Everybodys learning how
Come on and safari with me

Early in the morning well be startin out
Some honeys will be coming along
Were loading up our woody
With our boards inside
And headin out singing our song

Come on (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me
Come along (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me

Lets go surfin now
Everybodys learning how
Come on and safari with me

At Huntington and Malibu
They're shooting the pier
At Rincon they're walking the nose
Were going on safari to the Islands this year
So if you're coming get ready to go

Come on (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me
Come along (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me

Lets go surfin now
Everybodys learning how
Come on and safari with me

They're anglin in Laguna in Cerro Azul
They're kicking out in Doheny too
I tell you surfings going wild
Its getting bigger every day
From Hawaii to the Shores of peru

Come on (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me
Come along (surfin) baby wait and see (surfin safari)
Yes Im gonna (surfin) take you surfin (surfin safari) with me

Lets go surfin now
Everybodys learning how
Come on and safari with me
