Hurricane Iwa, 1982


Hurricane Iwa, amplified by strong El Niño conditions, with winds gusting up to 120 miles per hour, swept into Hawaii on the afternoon of November 23, 1982—the first hurricane to hit the islands in 23 years. Only three hurricane-related fatalities were recorded, but the storm did more than $200 million in damage, mostly on the island of Kauai.
